Empress Lilandra calls a meeting with her grand council to discuss the threat of the Dark Phoenix. In conclusion, it is decided that the Phoenix needs to be destroyed.
In the night, the President of the United States calls for an emergency assembly of the Avengers. Mr Jarvis the caretaker, answers the call and is alerted to the absence of the Beast, who was supposed to be on duty.
At the mansion, Beast helps the X-Men build a “mnemonic scrambler” to mentally paralyse the Phoenix. Storm tries to lend comfort to Cyclops, but he refuses to give into his emotions yet. Meanwhile, Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler are training in the Danger Room to prepare themselves for the battle ahead.
Back on Earth, Jean Grey brings the Phoenix to her home. Jean returns to find comfort from her family, but she only senses the fear in her family of her. This angers the Dark Phoenix but before she can do anything destructive, the X-Men arrive to subdue her. With a surprise attack, Nightcrawler is able to fit the Phoenix with the “mnemonic scrambler”. The Phoenix is momentarily disorientated, giving the X-Men a window of opportunity to strike but they can’t bring themselves to kill her. The Phoenix regains full control of Jean’s body and mind and prepares to dispose of the X-Men.
Cyclops steps out from the shadows to confront the Dark Phoenix. He does not strike, but rather, surrenders. The Phoenix can’t bring herself to kill the X-Men, leaving Cyclops convinced that the human Jean Grey is still in there. With the Phoenix caught off-guard, Xavier strikes the Phoenix psychically, and the two proceed to engage in a psychic battle. With the help of Jean, Xavier is able to subdue the Phoenix.
Cyclops rushes to the side of his fallen lover and spontaneously proposes to Jean. But the X-Men have barely picked themselves up when they are mysteriously teleported away from the Grey residence.
