Uncanny X-Men (Vol 1) #131: Run for Your Life

The X-Men come to Kitty’s rescue when she is being chased into an alley. Phoenix destroys her pursuers while Nightcrawler teleports Kitty to safety. Cyclops realises the magnitude of Phoenix’s powers and begins to question her mind and capabilities. Nightcrawler loses a frightened Kitty on a rooftop. Phoenix “psychokinetically” rearranges her costume’s molecules into that of civilian clothing to calm and coax Kitty out of hiding as Jean.

Kitty relates the day’s events to the X-Men. At the malt shop, Kitty saw Storm, Colossus, Wolverine and Professor Xavier get captured and brought to an industrial park where she was rescued. Phoenix scans the mind of one of the guards that the X-Men had taken hostage. She learns about the Hellfire Club, and about a “modern-day Jason Wyngarde”, who resembled the man in her hallucinations.

The X-Men sneak into the industrial park under the guise of being captured. Phoenix plants a mind-controlled guard in the driver’s seat and successfully gets past security. Meanwhile, Kitty slips into the building and frees Wolverine and Colossus before she is knocked out by a guard. Cyclops, Phoenix, Dazzler and Nightcrawler fight their way into the building.

Phoenix confronts the White Queen while Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Dazzler regroup with Wolverine, Colossus and Kitty. They head off in search of Storm, only to witness Phoenix take out the White Queen and devastating the industrial park. Phoenix and Storm walk away unscathed with the professor.

The X-Men return Kitty to her parents. Dazzler, deciding that life as an X-Men is not cut out for her, parts from the team. With a little telepathic nudge, Jean alters the memories of Kitty’s angry father into one eager to enroll Kitty into Xavier’s school. This sits even more uneasy with Scott and he confides in Ororo about Jean’s change since the Phoenix. Ororo agrees that they need to help Jean before the dark side of the Phoenix consumes her.
