Phoenix transports the X-Men through the Stargate portal, but are greeted on the other side by the evil emperor D’Ken and his Shi’ar army. Cyclops demands that the princess Lilandra be released, prompting a fight between the X-Men and the Shi’ar. Amidst the chaos, Nightcrawler manages to get to Lilandra and teleports her to safety.
Lilandra explains that she had called upon the X-Men for help to defeat her power hungry brother, D’Ken, who had discovered the “deadliest weapon” in the universe and was planning to use it for his gains. She had escaped execution and had a chance encounter with Xavier. If D’Ken should use the “M’Kraan Crystal”, he will summon ultimate power and destroy the universe.
Unknown to them, they are being watched by a group of space pirates, called the Starjammers, led by their leader, Corsair. They also have a plan to stop D'Ken from using the crystal.
Outnumbered and overpowered, the X-Men are slowly taken down by the Shi’ar. Suddenly, the Starjammers arrive and prevents Gladiator, the Imperial Guard of the Shi’ar, from taking Lilandra. The tables have turned and soon the Shi’ar are defeated.
Suspicious of Corsair’s American accent, Phoenix’s probing discovers the alarming truth of Corsair’s real identity.
Still, they are too late to stop D’Ken from summoning the power of the crystal. The fabric of reality as they know it was in jeopardy.
