Magneto taunts the X-Men, and Cyclops is suspicious of Magneto’s overconfidence. Nightcrawler’s scouting efforts proved Cyclops’ point when they find themselves thrust into space like a rocket. Magneto explains that he was on a mission to confront the X-Men on “unfinished business”. Beast had interrupted Magneto’s search in the empty mansion, and Magneto followed Beast to the carnival where Mesmero had held them captive.
After throwing Mesmero out the window of the flying wagon, Magneto docks the wagon at its destination, an “underground complex” inside of a volcano, buried beneath an ice cap in Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America.
The X-Men put up a hard fight, but even with immense powers, Phoenix succumbs to Magneto’s ability to summon the Earth’s magnetic forces to him. With the X-Men held captive and rendered powerless by a special mechanism created to neutralise their powers, Magneto has plans to torture the X-Men as payback for what they had put him through.
