Phoenix attempts to singlehandedly stop D’Ken and restore the crystal. She teleports the X-Men back to the Starjammers’ ship for safety. The X-Men and Starjammers flee out of range of D’Ken’s exploding ship. The Phoenix is not strong enough to stop D’Ken, resulting in the crystal creating a black hole, consuming the entire galaxy.
The Starjammers’ ship is sucked into the crystal. Along with it the X-Men, the Starjammers, Lilandra and Gladiator.
The X-Men and Gladiator are powerless against D’Ken. He attacks Lilandra. The Phoenix, who had entered the centre of the crystal to learn more about it re-emerges to stop D’Ken from killing Lilandra.
The Phoenix’s host, Jean with her empathic abilities, had gained knowledge on how to “heal”" the crystal. The Phoenix teleports the X-Men, Lilandra and Gladiator to safety while she undertakes the task of “re-weaving the fabric” of the M’Kraan Crystal to seal the breach and restore the crystal.
The Phoenix then departs in Jean’s body to bury the crystal in the heart of the sun, out of reach to anyone. She leaves behind distraught X-Men, especially her beloved, Cyclops.
With order to the universe restored, Lilandra and Gladiator return to the Shi’ar, and the X-Men to Earth. Cyclops begins the difficult task of mourning for the loss of Jean.
Beast: “Scottie -- The Phoenix is a mythical bird consumed by fire...but always rising again from the ashes. You’ll see Jean again. I’ll bet my furry blue bod on that.”
Cyclops: “Captain Corsair lost his wife, and now I’ve lost Jean. I wish we’d had a chance to speak more.”
Beast: “Cyke, Emily Dickinson said, ‘Parting is all we know of heaven, and all we need know of hell’. We’ll share the pain, Scottie. We’re X-Men.”
Cyclops (thoughts): I miss you, Jean.
